This year marks a significant milestone for Loring Hospital's Outpatient Center Wound Care Clinic as it celebrates 10 years of dedicated service to Sac County and surrounding communities. Since opening its doors in 2016, the clinic has provided life-changing wound care treatments, helping more than 5,700 patients – many of whom face complications from diabetes, poor circulation, and other chronic conditions – on their road to healing.
The clinic, a member of the Healogics network, was established in June 2016 after Dr. Zoltan Pek identified a need for specialized, accessible care for patients dealing with chronic or acute wounds.
“I was seeing patients with wounds who were having to drive to other hospitals for treatments,” says Dr. Pek. “I wanted to open a space at Loring Hospital that could better serve patients locally who were suffering from chronic and acute wounds.”
What began ten years ago as a clinic that saw only a few patients per week, very quickly grew into a clinic that now provides care to an average of 10-15 patients per week.
Loring Hospital's Wound Care Clinic is equipped and staffed to care for people whose open sores have resisted traditional treatment. Wounds include diabetic foot ulcers, post-surgical incisions, radiation wounds, pressure ulcers, burns, skin tears, and much more.
“Wounds, whether acute or chronic, can prevent people from doing simple things for themselves,” says Dr. Pek. “With our process at Loring’s wound center, all wounds are measured weekly, along with taking photos that are saved in the patient’s chart. This makes it easy to track the healing of wounds. Seeing our patients return to their normal routine is very rewarding.”
Wound treatment therapies include hyperbaric oxygen, debridement (removal of dead or damaged tissue), bio-engineered tissue substitutes, and platelet growth technologies.
“Chronic wounds can be isolating for patients, so our wound center nurses become their advocates, educators, and cheerleaders,’ says Sally Mason, Loring Hospital’s outpatient center/surgery manager. “I enjoy seeing patients throughout their treatment and observing how much progress has been made in the healing of their wounds. Being a small part of helping patients regain their independence is so meaningful.”
The clinic has been the recipient of several awards over recent years, including Healogics Center of Distinction Award in 2023, 2024, and 2025; the Healogics Robert Warriner III MD Clinical Excellence Award 2025; and the Healogics President’s Circle Award in 2025.
“We have a knowledgeable group of nurses that are great advocates for our patients,” adds Mason. “Because we see patients either daily, three times a week, or weekly, we are able to build strong relationships and trust.”
